insan egemenliğinin başladığı çağ. bu çağda elflerin çoğu denizin ötesine geçmiş, insanlar dışında orta dünyada kalan diğer ırklar onlardan saklanarak gizli bir yaşam sürmeye başlamıştı ve zaman içinde unutulup gittiler. aynı zamanda yeni çağ, genç günler ve yeni günler diye de anılır.

barad-dur'un düşüşünün ikinci yılından itibaren olan zaman. tolkien en son 172 yılındaki kırmızı kitap'ın fingedil tarafından gondor'da tamamlanmasını betimlemiştir.

sonrası için tolkien dahi yorum yapmamıştır ancak

diye bir lafı vardır, ayrıca bakılınca her çağın birer savaşla bittiği görülür. böylece, dördüncü çağ ne zaman biter belli olmaz ama beşinci çağ büyük iskender'in pers'lerle olan savaşıyla ya da roma kartaca savaşları ile biter. altıncı çağın ise 1945 yılında ikinci dünya savaşı ile bittiği düşünülmektedir.

ayrıca dragonlance de de böyle bir çağ mevcuttur.

büyük ejderha savaşları olmuş, kahramanlar * * * * * * bu dönemde yaşamışlardır. bir ejderha savaşı ile başlamış kaos savaşı ile bitmiştir.
