Bird flu showdown at farm Vets in Budapest yesterday cleared their farms and abattoirs of exporting the H5N1 virus. Chief state vet Miklos Suth brazenly told a Press conference: "Our scientific information is that Britain couldnt get from Hungary any kind of infected poultry." But an hour later the UKs deputy chief vet Fred Landeg insisted the flu found at the Matthews farm in Holton, Suffolk, was "99.96 per cent identical" to the outbreak in Hungary. A Defra spokesman also scotched claims the flu was transmitted by wild birds while admitting there was no evidence of "illegal poultry movements". The claims and counter-claims came as the first consignment of turkeys arrived at the Holton plant after the Government allowed processing to start again. Workers sprayed the wheels of all vehicles entering the site with disinfectant. Meanwhile, Environment Secretary David Miliband cancelled a trip to the US after criticism over his handling of the crisis. Kaynak: SağlıkHaber |
