HPV Vaccine Controversary
 

Some Texas lawmakers say the issue needs to be debated and want the governor to rescind his executive order.

Many parents are concerned about possible side effects from the new vaccine.

Texas parents can opt out of getting their daughters vaccinated.

Others say requiring the Human Papillomavirus vaccine could promote sex.

Perry says it`s about women`s health and that he refuses to tell a young woman fighting cervical cancer that the state could have stopped it with the HPV vaccine.

The governor says in the past, young women who have abstained from sex until marriage have contracted HPV from their husbands and faced the difficult task of defeating cervical cancer.

The governor`s executive order would require eleven and 12-year-old girls to get the HPV vaccine beginning September 2008.

State Senator Jane Nelson asks why boys aren`t included in the requirement.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, studies are being done to find out if the vaccine works to prevent HPV in boys and men.

HPV is a sexually transmitted disease that can cause cervical cancer.

About 20-million people across the U.S. are infected with HPV.

That includes one in four 15-to-24-year-olds.
