History History The presidents and representatives of the national thoracic societies in Balkan, Middle Asia and Mediterranean countries, participated to the Annual Meetings of the Turkish Thoracic Society since 2000, expressed their willingness for close co-operation. Eurasia-Mediterranean countries, have common historical, cultural and social peculiarities and have similar problems related to lung health. These constituted the foundation of this willingness towards close co-operation. As the result of many meetings held with the representatives of the national thoracic societies in the region, a consensus appeared that co-operation of the national thoracic societies in the region should be in a more effective way within an organization named Forum of Eurasia-Mediterranean Thoracic Societies (FEMTOS). The First General Assembly of FEMTOS gathered during the 8th Annual Congress of Turkish Thoracic Society on 29th April, 2005 at Antalya, Turkey and accepted the bylaws, action plan and elected the executive commitee.
