Chronic low back pain presents a major challenge for our society because of its increasing incidence, sociel and medical implications. As chronic low-back pain were enrolled in a double-blind, randomized trial designed to investigate the clinical efficacyof flurbiprofen. Group I was treated with 200 mg/day of flurbiprofen for one month and group II was given a placebo. Clinical evaluation was realized by the patient on a pain visualanalogue scale (VAS), four point verbal rating scale for general well-being and by the physician on pain on movement, Arthritis Impact Measurement Scale (AIMS), Beck Depression Scale and four point verbal
rating scale for general well-being before treatment and on weeks 1 and 4. Adverse events and laboratory
assessments were documented. The Affect subgroup of AIMS questionnaire and both patients and physicians verbal rating scale scores showed significant difference in favor of flurbiprofen group on week 4 but no difference on week 1.Both groups showed an improvement on VAS scores between two groups.
No difference before and after treatment in both groups were found in Beck Depression Scale scores.
Significantly more patients given flurbiprofen had gastrointestinal side effects compared with placebo
(%20 and %5 respectively).
This study shows that the use of flurbiprofen in chronic low back pain is of interest. Flurbiprofen has an effect on general well-being and may help to restore the functionality of the chronic low back pain patients even the symptoms have not completely disappeared.
